Hello MN wing pilots,
We seem to be having some problems with regards to our operations into and
out of KSGS (Fleming field). This is a challenging airport due to the
amount of traffic operating out of there and the close proximity to both
KMSP and KSTP airports and their class B and class D airspace.
If you are new to operating out of KSGS or haven't been there in a while I
would recommend reviewing the new KSGS operations page on the MN wing
website under operations , and flight planning tab. (will be loaded shortly)
In the meantime some items to remember are:
- KSTP class D airspace starts just north of the I494 highway. Less than 1
mile north of the KSGS airport( see orange line on attached map), if you
are going to enter the class D airspace you need to contact the KSTP
control tower on 119.1 to let them know you are going to be in their
airspace.
- KMSP class B airspace starts at ground level up to 10,000 ft just over 1
mile west of KSGS and the floor of the Class B airspace is only 2300' over
KSGS. (see dark blue lines on attached map) you must have clearance from
MSP approach control before entering any part of class B airspace.
- KSGS uses LEFT hand traffic for both runways (16 and 34)
- Due to the airspace constraints, when entering the pattern for runway 34
and approaching from the NE, E, or SE the procedure is to fly at pattern
altitude (1720 ft msl) crossing over the middle of the field and making a
LEFT turn to join downwind, spacing yourself with existing traffic. Then
proceeding around the pattern making left turns as normal. (See the red
line on the attached map)
- Operating on runway 16 is a standard 45 degree angle entry to downwind,
remember to keep your base turn in close so as to not enter the KSTP class
D airspace.
- when winds are light, it's a good practice to listen to the ATIS for KSTP
on 118.35 to see what direction they are operating to avoid conflicting
with traffic coming out of KSTP.
-Do Not make right turn out departures off runway 34 as you may conflict
with arrivals into KSTP
- If the traffic pattern is full, circle out to the east of the river until
space opens up for you to enter the pattern safely.

Thank you for your dedication to making our operations out of KSGS as safe
as possible.
Respectfully,
