Greetings, Pilots,
Ol' man Winter will be upon us soon, and the challenges of flying in our Minnesota Winters will also be upon us. Who knows, we might actually get some snow this season!
But, do not despair, there is a solution. We have a tradition, and CAP requirement, to refresh our knowledge of winter-related flying issues, items new to us, and, best of all, Air Force funded flying to put this knowledge into practice.
The updated Winter Briefing is available on the Operations page of the Intranet under "Standardized Procedures and Training".
All pilots are expected to receive this Briefing.
Here's how it works:
1) When your Squadron has scheduled the Briefing, please email the date and time to me.
2) After your briefing, please send me a roster of participants. I encourage the use of the attached form, but you are welcome to use your local form.
The list of participants will be "checked into" the Mission by either your Stan/Eval Officer, or the Member who facilitated the briefing. If you are not checked into the Mission, you are not eligible for funded flying. It behooves you to attend and get your name on the roster.
If you're on the roster, but not checked into the Mission, I will check you into the Mission as rosters arrive. Please don't check yourself into the Mission. Our Core Value of Integrity requires us to be honest about our attendance at the Briefing.
If you're not able to attend the Squadron briefing, reach out to your Facilitator and arrange a briefing, and your Stan/Eval Officer will let me know.
3) Funded flying is available to those that have facilitated or attended the Briefing. Unfortunately, the Mission Scenario is "Train Aircrews for winter operations..." After talking with Wing DO, Capt. Bestul, if you're not Aircrew Qualified (TMP or SAR MP), funding is not available to you, however, I still encourage you to go fly with your favorite Instructor and do Proficiency maneuvers with Winter Operations in mind.
As always, proficiency is the goal, and is expected.
Right now, the Mission is REQ-25-0992, however, the Mission will become active soon and the Mission # will change. It will be available on 01 November, 2024. I don't know yet when it will close, so keep an eye on it.
Two other items to note:
1.
Cowling plugs - If your airplane is plugged in and has a blanket on during the winter, the cowl plugs are not to be used.
2.
Flight Instructors - Your TSA Security Training is good for 2 years. e-Services has updated your Qual to reflect the change.
Thank you.
Respectfully,
Capt. Frank Daly
