See below for an explanation of the  SLCT MAG message you might see if the system is set to True north instead of the default  Magnetic north

CAP recently had an event where a crew executed a precautionary return to base (RTB), for a potential Magneto issue. Further research showed the PFD message of SLCT MAG to indicate a Display Unit(DU), Navigation Angle selection of other than Magnetic North.

 

If the pilot/crew has selected the Display Unit for the Navigation Angle to True North, the PFD will show the Annunciator Message of SLCT MAG.  The system is simply reminding the pilot/crew to select the default Display Angle to Magnetic North. Crews may continually see this message when using the DU of True North, for SAR grid navigation.

 

The G1000 Primary Flight Display (PFD) Annunciator Message can occur in the G1000 aircraft, depending on the software build. It is believed this affects G1000 Nxi aircraft and newer.

 

This SLCT MAG message can potentially be confused with a Magneto failure / selection event.
