*MN Wing Aircraft Maintenance Officer Report:*

*1. Current aircraft discrepancies and short term maintenance due:*
The current list is attached. Over 1/2 of the list is for known scheduled
maintenance. The other items range from inoperative lights to radio
communication issues to a rough running magneto. A reminder that for the
winter months when Stanton Airfield gets snow and ice, you'll likely be
dropping airplanes coming into maintenance off at the Wing aircraft
maintenance hangar. Assistant AMO Tom Fitzhenry and I will coordinate with
John Quilling on any flying into Stanton.

*2. Speaking of Winter operations:*
The squadron operations officers should be well into providing the Winter
Flying Safety briefings for all pilots. At the start of the colder weather
we had a few dead battery/starting issues come up. Cowl blankets, prop
blankets, engine heaters, bug eyes, oil cooler plates, cowl plugs, some
heated hangars - they are all provided so your flying goes as well as you'd
like. Plan ahead for the upcoming cold weather flights, including being
aware of our Wing supplement on temperature extremes.

*3. Squadron Operations Officers monthly status reports (new):*
I mentioned this last month but it missed a few people - the new report is
on the Wing intranet under Operations. It includes a couple new areas that
we need your action on. Date of last flight and who is responsible for
updating the nav database are new on this form along with the cowl plugs
and tie down ropes (not out yet). Wing DO Greg Bestul is following up on
any issues we see in these reports. By the way, the current nav database
expiration date is December 26. You don't have to wait until that day or
afterwards to upload the new one. The website has the new one available
about a week before the expiration of the current one.

*4. MN Wing will be getting 2 new C172 G1000 airplanes:*
I believe sometime this month we have pilots flying to Cessna to pick up
these new airplanes. We will be losing 2 airplanes though so the size of
the fleet will stay the same. N98424 is nearing engine and prop overhaul
tach time, so that'll go away, probably to be sold. N98175 will be
transferred to the South Dakota Wing. This will bring us to 5 C172S models
in the fleet, making it easier to spread around the C172 airplanes with
G1000 avionics. This updating of our fleet is due to the leading number of
flying hours and training hours that MN Wing has. Keep up the great work!

*5. New drop-down menu items for A9 flights in WMIRS:*
NHQ has recently updated the definitions of what flights can be considered
A9 (maintenance) flights. When flying an A9 now, you'll have to choose from
MX crew transport, MX aircraft drop off, MX engine break-in, MX factory
pickup or MX aircraft pickup.

*6. I bet you didn't know....:*
For every discrepancy that is filed in AMRAD, there are 7 steps involved
from start to finish. *Step 1* Enter the discrepancy. This is either done
by a pilot or by me. I'm guessing that I do about 90% of them. *Step
2* Validate
the discrepancy. As the AMO I have to validate that it has been entered
correctly, hitting all the boxes it needs to. And yes, this step must be
done separately even when I entered the discrepancy. *Step 3* Contact the
maintenance contractor to make him aware of this, talk about scheduling,
and whether or not this may be over the $750 threshold which requires NHQ
approval. *Step 4* If this will be over the threshold, get an estimate of
the cost and update the discrepancy with that information and check the box
that requires NHQ approval. *Step 5* Schedule the work to be done with the
contractor and advise if NHQ approval has been received if necessary. As
part of that approval, an acknowledgement must be made in AMRAD that I've
received NHQ approval. Schedule the necessary movement of the airplane into
maintenance. *Step 6* Update a description of the work done in the
discrepancy in AMRAD. *Step 7* Close out the discrepancy in AMRAD.

In Fiscal Year 2024 MN Wing had 234 discrepancies in AMRAD. That's 1,638
entries in the AMRAD system. We also had over 400 A9 sorties to get
airplanes into and out of maintenance. I just thought you'd like to know
what I do with my spare time!
