*MN Wing Aircraft Maintenance Officer Report - 1/7/24*
*1. Open Discrepancies:* Current list attached. Several discrepancies
relate to the upgrading of 3 of our aircraft to the GNS400, several are
routine 50 hour and 100 hour/annual inspections, a few relating to prop,
prop governor and magneto overhauls, the N439CP engine overhaul and a few
miscellaneous items.
*2. N439CP engine overhaul:* The engine has been removed and shipped to
the vendor for overhaul. Estimated time for it to return is approximately 4
months. NHQ has several other engines ahead of this one already waiting at
their vendor for work to be done.
*3. N878CP prop overhaul:* This has been at Maxwell Prop Shop for a couple
weeks now, and may be another week or so for that to return.
*4. Forecasting these major interruptions:* John and I are always looking
ahead to minimize these disruptions (magneto overhaul, prop and prop
governor overhaul, etc.) and down time as much as possible. NHQ has given
John approval routinely to perform certain maintenance items early, while
the aircraft is down for another purpose, to minimize any extended down
time/flying time.
*5. GNS 400 GPS installations:* N50935 and N9834L have completed their
G400 installations. The last one to receive the G400 will be N98824, and
the request for NHQ to send that to John has been made. FYI N97465 already
had a G400 when we received it some time back. This will complete the fleet
upgrade to get rid of the GX55 gps in the C172s.
*6. G1000, G1000NXI, G650 and G400:* The good news is that we've
substantially improved the GPS units in our fleet. The bad news is that we
now have 4 different models of GPS to learn to work with. And each of these
has a different method of updating the navigational databases. Greg
Erickson and Greg Vitas have taken on a major project to develop training
materials for each of these systems so we can make sure we always have the
databases updated/current. I have seen a major improvement in getting these
updated since they took this on. *Have you ever looked for the GPS manual
in the airplane? There should be one in every plane. *If you have any
questions on this project, please contact them.
*7. Thank You to the Squadron DOs:* The Operations Officer Monthly
Aircraft Status Report due by the 7th of each month to me, has been a
success! The reports have come in with information I need and I appreciate
it very much. One element of that report is to verify the navigational
database currency. I've then forwarded that information on to Greg E and
Greg V for action. Thanks again to Greg Bestul/Chet Wilberg for developing
this report and getting it onto the Wing Intranet site (under Operations).
*8. Upcoming MX schedule:* The wonderful Minnesota winter weather has made
airplane movement difficult so far. Upcoming maintenance - N853CP due for
100 hour/annual inspection, 4 airplanes are within 20 hours of 100
hour/annual inspections (N96579, N837CP, N98424, and N695CP).We also have
magneto overhauls and ELT batteries coming up soon.
As always, if you have any comments or questions about aircraft
maintenance, please let me know. Text or email preferred.
