The following is an article from "The Dispatch" on the importance of
mindfulness and situational awareness. To that I would add that complacency
is a risk that's easy to fall into that can lead to one "not paying
attention."
Thank you for your attention.

Mindfulness and Situational Awareness:
Key Components of Any Safety Plan
By: 1st Lt. Carole Cox, DCS, SO, WV-049
As a supervisor in the industry, I filled out more accident reports in my
time than I would have liked. Although most were not serious, the paperwork
and follow-up were a burden, someone or something was damaged, and there
was usually a monetary loss of some kind. When I would ask the employee
what happened, the most common answer was, “I wasn’t paying attention.”
Safety briefs are often documented, warning employees of similar hazards,
along with numerous safety guards in place. However, the one thing that
could not be done was programming the human mind.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2019,
the cost of injury in the United States was $4.2 trillion. This includes
the combined cost of healthcare, loss of work, loss of lives, and quality
of life.
Mindfulness and Situational Awareness are often confused; however, they are
different. Encouraging both practices can go a long way toward preventing
“I wasn't paying attention.”
We like to think we can “multitask,” but that is simply a myth. We can only
clearly and correctly manage one task at a time. Unfortunately, time and
emotional stressors detract from a fully committed mind.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, Mindfulness is:
1. The quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.
2. A mindful state is achieved by focusing one’s attention on the
present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings,
thoughts, and bodily sensations used as a therapeutic technique.
Situational Awareness is the ability to perceive, understand, and
effectively respond to a situation. It involves responding to an occurrence
that includes gathering and analyzing information, which allows a safe
response to a risk. It can be said that mindfulness allows the brain to
employ Situational Awareness.
Encouraging Mindfulness toward Situational Awareness in Civil Air Patrol
activities ensures that the value of safety training and risk assessment
are present. Without efforts to embed these practices into all training, we
risk reverting to a mindset of “I wasn't paying attention.” When this
occurs, it is a failure for all members, especially safety officers.
