Good evening squadron:

The following are some safety concerns that have been brought to our
attention by Minnesota Wing:

“The first issue concerns the Vans. We have had a couple of instances where
Van antennas were damaged. One was at an automatic car wash, where the
antenna was knocked loose and not reported. This caused the sheet metal to
deteriorate, making the repair more difficult.
The other was actually a while ago, but I would like to remind you of it.
The van pulled into a garage with an automatic door opener and the antenna
hit the opener, after repeated strikes, the antenna finally broke off.
I have a few comments on these. First, post the van's height to the top of
the antenna so the driver can see it and be aware of it. Second, do not go
through drive-throughs, car washes, and garages that do not meet the height
requirements. Someone mentioned taking the antenna off before entering the
car wash, but that is not allowed. The mounts are small and fragile, and
water can get into the van's roof and cause corrosion and other issues.
As for van washing, the recommended way to clean the vehicle is by hand or
at a self-serve car wash.

We've continued to experience several instances of hangar rash—three in the
past couple of months alone. The majority of these incidents have occurred
during single-pilot operations. Common causes include slipping while
maneuvering the aircraft, leading to swerving, or encountering a small
"lip" between the ramp and the hangar floor.

Please take extra care when operating around hangars. Familiarize yourself
with the specific hangar you're using, identify any potential hazards, and
have a clear plan in place to ensure safe movement of the aircraft.”

Remember that with our hangar at St. Croix Squadron, we have the black and
yellow markings for the the hangar main door. As long as the door is up to
the markings, all vehicles including aircraft should clear the door fine.
If you’re involved in moving vehicles or aircraft, it’s helpful to have
others assist with ensuring that they will clear all obstacles.

Thank you,
