Hello MN wing pilots,
November Stan/Eval Newsletter
This month I have a couple of items that have come up in our wing from our
members, and I have attached the NHQ stan/eval newsletter link.
Many of you have probably seen the must read item regarding crosswind
limits. To summarize: NHQ is *researching* increasing the crosswind limits
to the manual demonstrated crosswind values that are listed in some of the
newest Cessna airplanes (we do not operate any of these airplanes). For
now, in Minnesota, *THE MAXIMUM CROSSWIND LIMITS FOR TAKEOFF AND LANDING IN
ALL POWERED AIRPLANES IN ALL OPERATIONS IS 15 KNOTS*. This does include
gusts. Your personal limit may be less than 15 knots if you are not
comfortable with a full 15 knot crosswind, but in no case may operating
with more than 15 knots be acceptable.
For our cadets that have obtained their private pilots license, through
wings or other method, NHQ has established a funded missions for them to
maintain proficiency. Mission A42 for wings graduates and A63 for non wings
PPL cadets. Both are eligible to fly 1.8 hours of proficiency flying each
month using AFAM profile #14,cadet recurrent training. If the cadet did
their flight training in other than a C172 then the onboarding/transition
funded mission can be used to get them ready for their form 5.
Remember all members are required to attend a winter operations briefing
to be ready for winter operations. This also is a prerequisite for being
able to use the funded winter flying mission that is available.
One question that came from a winter briefing this year is: Will partially
filling the fuel tanks (like we use in the C172S and C182) make them
susceptible to frost? Since we park our airplanes inside hangers they are
not susceptible to radiant heat loss, and thus frost. If you leave an
airplane outside overnight it would be preferable to fill the tanks to
full. In either case, a through preflight to check for frost or snow on the
airplane and sumping fuel to check for water is always required.
Feel free to send me your questions and I will help you find the answers.
Take Care, Fly Safe
