Hello MN Wing pilots,
The busy flying season is about to get underway. School will be ending for
our cadets soon which will give them more time to do orientation flights.
Our glider season will be starting shortly, so be ready to get cadets (and
seniors) out to experience the thrill of flying like a bird in an airplane
without an engine.
By the end of this week I will be sending out the ground briefing slides
for this year's pilot flight clinic. Each squadron's stan/eval or
operations officer will present the briefing to their squadron to make sure
each pilot has a good refresher training session and is aware of new items
before we move into the summer flying season. As in years past, once a MP
or TMP has attended the ground briefing they will be eligible for a funded
flight. I will pass along dates and times that squadrons will be presenting
the ground briefings so if you can't make it to your own squadrons briefing
you may be able to join a neighboring squadron.
For those of you that will be getting ready for your form 5 in the near
future, we have discovered a glitch in the online 70-1 test in AXIS that
created some headaches for us.
The problem stems from the fact that the AXIS learning system is going away
sometime in June, so there is not much motivation for NHQ to fix this
problem. We will be changing over to a new learning system called ABSORB in
June which should solve our problems. More information on ABSORB will be
forthcoming as we get closer to the changeover date.
In the meantime if you are taking the online 70-1 tests, you should be able
to take the general test (you may have to go into "my transcript" section
to get into the test ) . Once you complete this test the system will not
let you open the powered exam , which is required. The workaround to fix
the problem is as follows:
- Go into WMIRS, and from the menu items listed on the left side click on
"CAP helpdesk"
- On the new screen click on "submit a problem"
- Fill in the boxes on the next screen, a description that you took the
70-1 general test and are unable to get into the powered exam. In the
category dropdown menu select AXIS learning management system. Once you
have everything filled in click on the submit button.
- NHQ will reset your AXIS system so you can get into the 2023 powered exam.
You can either check back to the CAP helpdesk and use the "My stuff" button
to check on the status of your problem or just go into AXIS and see if you
can get into the test.
I know this is a frustrating process, but luckily it should be very short
lived.
We have recently added a new plane to the MN wing. It is a steam gauge C172
that came from the Kansas wing. It has a Garmin 650 installed so should
look comparable to our older C172's. One difference is the seat lock for
the pilot seats. It has the older system slide lock to prevent pilot seats
from sliding back all the way unless you depress the half moon shaped lock
release located on the seat rail on the right side rail. If you are going
to fly this plane take a look at how this works before you get into the
plane so you are familiar with its operation.
Remember to do postflight inspections!!! We want our airplanes ready to fly
when we get out to the hangar. There is nothing more disappointing than to
go out to the airport and find a flat spotted tire or hangar rash issue
during preflight that if properly discovered on the previous flights
postflight inspections would have been corrected before we got out to the
airport.
I have attached the link to this month's NHQ Stan/Eval newsletter.
